Project aim:
To encourage individual households, residents’ groups and estates to adopt environmental actions and to celebrate and reward individuals and community groups who are being environmentally friendly.

What you have done:
Devon & Cornwall Housing have just launched a green living award programme offering cash rewards for the:

  • The Greenest Estate £250

  • The Best Green Resident Led Initiative £250

  • The Greenest Household £75

  • The Most Improved Green Household £75

  • Best ‘green’ idea from a young person up to the age of 16 years old. £20 gift voucher.

We are inviting residents to complete an application form and send in photographs. The applications are to be assessed by a team of residents supported by two environmental professionals, a local authority recycling officer and voluntary sector environmental manager. We will be promoting the good work and ideas received on our annual calendar that is sent to every resident household. (Poster )

Which community partners were involved:

xeter City Council and Global Action Plan. Before launching the programme we did internet searches to see what other green programmes were in existence.

Where did the money come from:
This initiative is part of the DEFRA funded ‘Sustainable Living Project’, further information is available in this summary report.

What worked well:
Only launched in July 2006, we will be able to review it in October when it has been judged and prizes awarded.

What next:
The grant programme was successful, and it has become a mainstream event and alongside our gardening competition.
