Project name:
Things are warming up round here
Social Landlord’s name:
The Devon Tenant Participation Network
Location:
Barnstaple – North Devon
Project aim:
To raise awareness of climate change and
offer social housing residents and staff ideas
of how they can reduce their environmental
footprint.
What you have done:
Organised a half-day event at a community
church venue for residents and housing staff
inviting the Devon County Council Climate Change
Officer Ian Bateman to lead a presentation on
climate change and what impact it could have on
the local area. This was followed by a fun
environmental quiz and opportunity for
participants to make their own green pledges.
Transport was provided and a local produce
buffet laid on. A report about the day can
be downloaded from here.
(Report )
When did it take place:
June 2005
Which community partners were
involved:
Devon County Council, Care Blackerton Caterers,
The Devon Tenant Participation Network, Devon &
Cornwall Housing, PETRA (Plymouth), East Devon
District Council, Signpost, Exeter City Council,
Torridge District Council, Mid Devon District
Council, Westcountry H.A., North Devon Homes,
West Devon Homes, Teign Housing, Grosvenor
Church.
Where did the money come from:
The Devon Tenant Participation Network
covered the cost and charged its members £20 per
head.
What worked well:
The question time session that followed the
presentation and quiz. Residents and staff had
some really good ideas on how to reduce carbon
emissions. A report recording these ideas was
written and sent to each landlord and resident
that attended.
What didn’t work so well:
The presentation about climate change was
quite technical in places however the sections
that referred to local areas and the amount of
emissions from transport and household energy
and domestic waste were really well received.
What next:
The DTPN made a pledge to run events the
following June for World Environment Day. Devon
& Cornwall Housing ran a Green Living Fayre.
