Energy

With energy costs rising at an alarming rate (45% since 2003) it makes good sense to find new ways to generate our heat and light and reduce our green house gas emissions. Individuals and families living on low fixed incomes are also more likely to fall into fuel poverty; where more than 10% of their disposal income is spent on paying fuel bills. The arguments for investing in energy efficiency measures and renewable energy (solar, wind, water and ground heat source) have never been stronger and social housing landlords and residents have a key role to play.

Did you know???

  • 27% of the UK's CO2 emissions come from the energy we use to heat, light and power our homes

  • Each household in the UK creates around six tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. (That's six times the weight of the rubbish a household throws away in a year and would fill six hot air balloons 10 metres in diameter.)

  • Plasma televisions use up to four times more energy as ordinary televisions.

  • The Government estimates that between 2004 and 2006 one million more vulnerable households slipped into fuel poverty (spending more than 10% of your disposable income on energy) due to the rise in energy prices. (page 27 of the 2006 fuel poverty strategy annual report)

  • If you pay for your energy using a key or card meter you are charged an additional daily or weekly fee, this is the most expensive way to pay. To find out what tariff you are being charged keep pressing the blue button on your key/card meter. If you like your key meter and don't want to change the way you pay to quarterly bills or direct debit why not visit Ebico a UK based not for profit ethical energy provider who offers a fair deal to prepayment meter users.
