What can my local community do?Communities

  • Promote healthy living in your newsletters and if you have one, on your web site.

  • Invite your local Primary Care Trust’s practice nurse to set up a stand at one of your events. They can test people’s blood pressure; offer advice on eating healthily and stopping smoking.

  • Alert your landlord and local authority to any issues on your estate that might effect residents’ health like damp walls, fly tipping, pests and dog fouling.

  • Link with your local further education college or adult education centre and offer basic food hygiene certificate training, first aid and cooking healthy food on a low income.

  • Through play a child explores the world around them. Consult with parents and children to find out how play opportunities can be improved in your area. Involve your landlord, council and local children’s services to make child friendly things happen in your area.

  • Check out your local cycle paths, cycling is a great exercise but fear of busy roads puts a lot of people off. Some local authorities offer cycle proficiency training and would be happy to run a session on your estate.

  • Be creative organise or link in with local arts projects to offer workshops or activities, like art classes, drama, dance, creative writing, reminiscence workshops and tai chi. Taking part in creative activities can be very therapeutic and great fun.
