Green Roots Residents GroupProject name:
Green Roots Group

Social Landlord’s name:
Mid Devon District Council

Location:
Mid Devon.

Project aim:
To offer residents’ and their families access to green activities and learning opportunities.

What you have done:
We have provided a wide range of activities over the last three years including:

  • Two permaculture courses

  • A kids Camp in 2004 at a Devon Farm where children experienced building their own shelters, charcoal burning, clay oven cooking and crafts and music workshops.

  • A visit to the Science Museum in Bristol

  • A visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales in 2005.

Which community partners were involved:
Mid Devon District Council and The Devon Rural Community Council (DRCC)

Where did the money come from:
Mid Devon District Council, The DRCC’s Community Key Fund, Money from leading workshops at conferences.

What worked well:
The Kid’s Camp was brilliant. The whole group felt strongly that through going on the camp the children had gained an understanding of environmental issues and what a special and beautiful place the natural world is.

What didn’t work so well:
We tried to set up a food co-op to bulk buy organic and health foods but as we are all on a low income we could not raise enough money collectively to achieve this plus storing the food was difficult.

What next:
Carry on as we have been doing raising awareness of green issues and enjoying the shared activities.
