Transport

Emissions of greenhouse gases from car and air travel are a major cause of climate change. Add to this, the pollution from vehicles, congestion and traffic jams in our cities and towns, noise, increased levels of asthma and respiratory diseases and death and injury from road accidents and we can see why we need to make some changes. Individuals, communities and businesses can all help to improve the situation by choosing to travel less by car, to invest in more energy efficient vehicles, share their journeys and where possible, walk, cycle, take the bus or hop on a train. It’s better for our health and the health of the planet

Did you know ???

  • In the UK transport (road/air) is responsible for 70% of our fossil fuel consumption and 20% of our CO2 emissions. Aviation traffic is increasing and the government estimate that this alone could produce 25% of our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

  • Road traffic grew by 20% between 1990 and 2003

  • Asthma increased fourfold in the last 30 years.

  • Travelling 6,000 miles in a car produces roughly its own weight in C02 emissions.

  • Only 5% of sports Utility Vehicles are ever driven ‘off-road’ and produce 40% more emissions of greenhouse gases and pollution.

  • 1 in 17 of us will be killed or injured in a road traffic accident.

  • 60% of car journeys have no passengers.
