CN4CProject name:
Eastern Green Community Association

Social Landlord’s name:
Devon & Cornwall Housing Association,
lots of community organisations and private householders involved too.

Location:
Eastern Green Penzance East ward

Project aim:
T
o provide a save route to school, play facilities and nature area for the local community.

What you have done:
The Community Association has negotiated the purchase of parcels of land to create a safe route to the local primary school and offer the space to create a wonderful community resource for all ages. The plan is to plant a natural hedgerow on the land, fruit orchard (plums, apples, cherries and pears) a play area, community garden with seating. The land is being bought and then given to the National Playing Association who will provide the insurance and maintain the play equipment.

Which community partners were involved:

  • National Playing Fields Association

  • CN4C (Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change)

  • Penzance Town Council

  • Local councillors

  • Sure Start

  • Local primary school

  • Various residents’ associations.

Where did the money come from:
DCHA – donated a parcel of land, Penzance Town Council, Cornwall Community Fund, Penwith Community Development Trust, The Liveability Community Pot.

What worked well:
Finding the funding to pay for the land was fairly quick and bringing together the community partnership.

What didn’t work so well:
Negotiating the sale of land from a private landowner. In total the project has taken 8 years to get to the point of purchasing the land.

What next:
We need to level the land, plant grass, hedgerows, trees and shrubs and find the funding for play equipment and community garden.
