What can my local community do?Communities

  • Promote water saving measures to residents through presentations, quizzes, articles in newsletters and if you have one, on your web site.

  • Invite your water utility’s education personnel to set up a stall at one of your events to promote water efficiency and re-use.

  • Offer free or subsidised water efficiency goods – hippos, rainwater butts. Most water authorities offer hippos and hogs free of charge; many will provide community groups with water saving goods for raffles.

  • Campaign for your landlord to take water efficiency seriously.

  • Organise a water survey on an estate, it encourages householders to share water saving tips and when people realise they are paying £500 a year more for their water than their neighbour they soon change their behaviour to water efficient.

  • Lead by example.
